5 Common Undercarriage Mistakes That Are Costing You Money

Undercarriage maintenance accounts for a large share of heavy equipment operating costs. Many operators unknowingly make small mistakes that lead to premature wear, expensive repairs, and lost productivity. Here are the most common errors—and how to avoid them.

1. Ignoring Regular Undercarriage Inspections
Skipping daily walkarounds and weekly undercarriage checks is the biggest mistake. Small issues like loose track tension, damaged seals, or worn sprocket teeth can quickly escalate into major failures. A quick 10-minute inspection can catch problems early, saving you thousands in unplanned repairs.

2. Incorrect Track Tension
Too-tight tracks increase friction, stress the drive system, and wear out components faster. Too-loose tracks cause excessive side-to-side movement, leading to track derailment and damage to idlers and rollers. Always adjust track tension according to your equipment manual, and recheck it after working in mud or rocky conditions.

3. Operating in the Wrong Gear or Speed
High speeds and aggressive maneuvering put unnecessary stress on the undercarriage. Spinning tracks in place, making sharp turns on hard surfaces, or operating at full speed on uneven terrain accelerates wear on tracks, sprockets, and rollers. Slow down, use proper operating techniques, and avoid overworking the undercarriage in rough conditions.

4. Using the Wrong Parts for the Job
Many operators buy generic or low-cost parts to save money upfront, only to pay more in the long run. Parts that don’t match OEM specifications or aren’t built for your working conditions will wear out faster, damage other components, and lead to frequent downtime. Investing in quality, application-specific parts always pays off.

5. Delaying Repairs for Minor Wear
It’s tempting to put off replacing a slightly worn idler or roller, but minor wear creates a domino effect. A worn part causes uneven load distribution, which speeds up wear on every other component in the undercarriage. Addressing small issues immediately prevents a chain of expensive failures down the line.
